Community Music School Teen Band
4:30-6:00pm, 112 Plateau Street, Santa Cruz
1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month: High School (int./Adv.) Band
2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month: Middle School (beginning) Band, with focus on flute players
For ages 12-19. Participants play in an ensemble, developing musicianship, flexibility, and musical creativity. Fiddler Conall Barber facilitates the High School group, arranging music from Ireland, Scotland, Brittany, Norway, Sweden, and the United States, in addition to modern and more quirky pieces. Instruments welcomed include fiddle, viola, flute, tin whistle, recorder, pipes, cello, upright bass, guitar, mandolin, banjo, dulcimer, autoharp, ukulele, Celtic harp, accordion and bodhran (Irish circle drum). Students must have at least one year of experience on their instrument; the ability to read sheet music and chord symbols is a plus, as is experience in the genre of traditional folk music, but NOT required. The group performs occasionally at various events as a community service.
Shelley Phillips leads the Middle School group on 2nd and 4th Thursdays, and offers flute instruction for those fairly new to the flute.
The cost to participate is on a sliding scale, from $0 to $10 per session, to help defray the costs of instruction. Potential students are welcome to come for a session and see if they like it – no obligation!
