Redwood Music Camp 2024

Scottish Dance Music for Saturday Evening’s Ceilidh

Here is the music for the Redwood Music Camp Ceilidh. It is designed to be printed double-sided. Make sure you enable “fit to page” or equivalent so you get the dance titles at the top and page numbers at the bottom.

If you are not use to Scottish Dance music, here are a few tips:

  • First off. Have fun! Don't worry if you fluff some notes or get lost.

  • Having said that, some practice beforehand doesn't hurt.

  • Also, you don't have to play for every dance. In fact, we need people to dance!

  • Depending on the dancers and schedule, Juliet, the caller, may reorder, repeat or omit dances.

  • In order to match the dance, the music has a particular road map. See top left of page and watch the repeats.

  • Typically jigs and reels are played at 110 half bars per minute; this might seem a bit slow for jigs and really fast for reels.

  • Marches are just a tiny bit slower.

  • The Highland Schottische is about 135 quarter notes/minute. The Canadian Barn Dance is about 145 quarter note/minute

  • Each dance will start with a chord or an intro - see the road map.

  • Each dance will end with a chord, or for waltzes a rallentando (slow down to end)

  • Since the sets are assembled from a database of tunes, sometimes the last bar of one tune is full and there is no room for the pickup notes of the next tune. Generally, you can omit notes from the end of a tune to allow you to play the pick up notes of the next.

There will be a meeting after the last workshop on Saturday (4:30pm) for those interested in playing. More explanation will be provided at that point.
