Fiddling by Ear
Wednesdays, July 9, 16, 23, 30 Fiddling by Ear Workshop, Community Music School's instructor Deby Benton Grosjean, 4:45-6PM at Calvary Episcopal Church in Santa Cruz. Fee $20 per student per workshop, payable to Deby Benton Grosjean. Workshop is for intermediate violinists and fiddlers. Adults and teens, includes 12 years of age, too. Please notify Deby if you want to attend. Tailor the workshops to your summer schedule by selecting the dates you are able to attend. Sheet music will be available at the last workshop. Important to bring a recording device. No music stand necessary. We will cover many regional styles: Ireland, Scotland, Cape Breton, Quebec, Appalachia, etc. At each workshop, we'll review the previous Wednesday's tunes. Make Your Own Bamboo Flute
Shelley Phillips is offering workshops in bamboo flute-making, in the tradition of Margaret James who developed a method of making flutes by hand during the arts & crafts movement in England in the 1930's. We made these bamboo 'pipes' last summer at Teen Camp with great success. Check it out at the Earth Day Celebration in downtown Santa Cruz at the Farmer's Market site on Sunday, April 27th in the afternoon. The Cabrillo Strings/Suzuki Music Program
provides a complete musical education for children through private lessons and group ensemble instruction. The program includes weekly lessons and participation in the Friday Ensembles held on the Cabrillo College campus. Fiddle instructor, Deby Benton Grosjean is offering a spring 2008 workshop, FUN CELTIC MUSIC SERIES on Wednesdays 4:45-6PM, Feb. 6, 13, 20, 27, & March 5, at Calvary Episcopal Church (in Parish Hall), 532 Center in Santa Cruz. A fun afternoon of fiddling and stories for young fiddlers, ages 8-12 yrs. Total fee is $85 payable to Deby Benton Grosjean which includes music materials. Santa Cruz Flute Choir
Directed by Lars Johannesson, this group provides a fun, supportive opportunity to play music and meet other flute players. Redwood Mountain Dulcimer Group
This informal group of dulcimer enthusiasts meets quarterly in the Santa Cruz area. With CMS they also produce a big fun weekend of mountain dulcimer workshops and concerts with nationally known artists/instructors the last weekend of July. The Cabrillo Youth Chorus was founded in 1998. It has performed with the Cantiamo! Cabrillo, Cabrillo Symphonic Chorus, Cabrillo Opera, Santa Cruz Youth Symphony and Cabrillo Music Festival, as well as participating in choral festivals and producing their own concerts. The Youth Chorus provides four levels of instruction for singers ages 8-18: beginning level singers (Dolce) and beginning-intermediate singers (Vivace) rehearse every Tuesday 4-5:30pm, and intermediate singers (Allegria) and advanced level singers (Con Brio) rehearse every Wednesday 4-5:30pm. There is also a boys chorus (formed in spring of 2005) which rehearses on Tuesdays from 5-6pm. The program is directed by Cheryl Anderson, director of choral activities at Cabrillo College. Community Music School Teen Programs
Teen Band
For ages 13-17. Teen musicians learn to play in an ensemble, developing musicianship, flexibility and musical
creativity. The class meets weekly with artistic director Shelley Phillips to arrange music from Ireland, Scotland,
Brittany, Norway, Sweden and Bulgaria, in addition to modern and more quirky pieces. Instruments include fiddle, viola, flute,
tin whistle, cello, upright bass, guitar, Celtic harp, accordion and percussion. Students must have at least two
years experience on their instrument, experience in the genre of Celtic folk music, and must be able to read sheet
music and chord symbols. Teen Band performs at art galleries in the SoWat district downtown, opens for Celtic concerts
in the community, and offers a free finale concert at the end of each quarter.
